Fans of singer Younha (윤하) marked the 18th anniversary of her debut with an ad on six digital screens beside a Seoul subway escalator. Every screen carries the same handwritten line, "윤하야, 데뷔 18주년 축하해!" ("Younha, congratulations on 18 years since your debut!"), and the date "2004.09.01". Here is what it looked like and how fans overseas can plan something like it.
Where was the ad displayed?
The screens are fixed to the wall beside an escalator inside a subway station. They climb the wall in steps, following the slope of the escalator, so a rider passes all six on the way up or down.
We do not have the station name. No sign in the photo shows it and it is not in our records. The first and last day of the display are also unknown.
What did the ad look like?
Each of the six upright screens shows a different photo of Younha, and the photos are the main event. From the bottom of the escalator upwards:
- on stage against a purple background, looking up as she sings;
- a playful shot in a black beret with both hands raised to her head, on bright blue;
- in profile at a microphone, on a dark stage;
- one arm lifted above her head, in deep blue light;
- singing with a hand-held microphone;
- a final stage shot at the top of the slope.
The text is the same on all six. A small "2004.09.01" sits at the top of each screen, and the greeting "윤하야, 데뷔 18주년 축하해!" is written across the lower part in white brush-style handwriting, broken over three lines.
There is no logo, hashtag or fan club name anywhere in the artwork. It reads like a personal note repeated six times.
When did it run?
The screens print "2004.09.01" and call the occasion the 18th anniversary. Eighteen years after 1 September 2004 is 1 September 2022, which is the year we use in the title. We have no record of how long the ad stayed up.
What is a subway digital screen ad?
These are upright screens mounted on station walls in sets. Beside an escalator they have a built-in advantage: people stand still while they ride, facing the wall, for the whole length of the slope.
This ad uses that well. Since the rider is carried past the screens one after another, the six photos play almost like a short slideshow, with the same sentence under each picture. Nothing needs to be read quickly. A calm design with one line of text suits the spot better than a crowded one.
Because the artwork names no fan group, we can't tell you who organized it. We only know what the screens say.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
An anniversary ad like this can be arranged from outside Korea. The steps:
- Choose the occasion and the date. For a debut anniversary, that date is already set.
- Choose where it should appear: station screens, a lightbox, a city bus or another spot.
- Prepare the message and the photos, and make sure you have the right to use each photo. A set of screens needs one image per screen.
- Send us your idea. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.
If you want a spot beside an escalator or stairs, tell us at the start so we can look for it first.
