Fans of Jang Wonyoung (장원영) of IVE celebrated her birthday with a lightbox ad in a Seoul subway station. The light blue panel reads "역시 장원영! 생일축하해" ("That's our Jang Wonyoung! Happy birthday") and is signed "FROM JANGWONYOUNG_CN". Here is what it looked like and how fans abroad can plan something similar.

Where was the ad displayed?

The ad filled a wide lightbox on a wall of pale green tiles inside a subway station. The frame sits low and wide along a walkway, under a strip light.

We can't see a station sign in our photos and have no record of the station name. The display dates are not recorded either.

What did the ad look like?

The background is a flat light blue with a white curve along the bottom, like a hill of snow. The drawing style is playful: a red heart, a four-pointed star, a line-drawn diamond and a few white dots are scattered around the photo.

In the centre is a photo of Jang Wonyoung in a black beret with a jewelled band, one finger held to her chin.

To the left of the photo, the words "역시 장원영!" are set in fat white letters with a brown shadow. To the right, in the same lettering, "생일축하해". Read together across the photo, they make one sentence.

Two blue ovals carry numbers: "0831" at the top left and "2004" at the bottom right. A white pill-shaped label at the bottom left gives a social media account name.

The top right corner has two small lines: "FROM JANGWONYOUNG_CN" and a photo credit, "PHOTO BY WANT__WY".

Who organized it?

The ad says "FROM JANGWONYOUNG_CN". We keep to that wording. The same photos in our records also show an ad for her group mate An Yujin in the same kind of frame, which we cover on a separate page.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A lightbox is a lit frame on a station wall, with the print placed in front of the lamps. Flat colour designs like this one benefit most: the blue stays even from edge to edge and the white letters almost seem to switch on.

Notice how the greeting is split in two and wrapped around the photo. A wide frame invites that. Instead of stacking the text in one corner, the fans used the face as the middle of the sentence, so the eye moves left, centre, right. The numbers and the credit are kept small and pushed to the corners, where they don't compete.

The ad does not print the year, and neither do our photos, so the title of this page has no year.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You don't have to be in Seoul to do this. The order is usually:

  1. Choose the occasion and the date to celebrate.
  2. Choose the place: a station lightbox, a bus, or another spot.
  3. Prepare your wording and photos. If a fan photographer took the picture, ask their permission and decide how to credit them, as this ad does.
  4. Send us your idea, and we will reply with the options open for your dates.

Birthdays have a fixed day, so leave time for artwork and booking.
