Fans of Jo Yuri (조유리) marked her birthday with a lit poster in a Seoul subway station. The pale blue design carries the greeting "유리야 생일 축하해" ("Yuri, happy birthday") in large white letters, and the bottom line reads "JOYURI_CHN". Here is what the ad looked like, and how fans in other countries can plan something similar.

Where was the ad displayed?

The ad sat in a wide lightbox on a tiled wall inside a subway station. In our photo the frame hangs at eye level beside a walkway, so people passing through the station would see it straight on.

Our photo does not show a station sign, and we have no note of the station name. We also have no record of the dates. Instead of guessing, we have left both out.

What did the ad look like?

The whole panel is a soft sky blue, with the words "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" printed very large and very faint across the background, like a watermark.

A darker blue strip runs along the top with three short labels: "2001" on the left, "JOYURI" in the middle and "1022" on the right. The ad does not say what the numbers stand for, and it does not print the year it ran.

On the left half, the greeting "유리야 생일 축하해" is set in thick white letters with a blue outline. Under it, a small pink tag reads "#HAPPY YURI DAY".

The right half is a close-up photo of Jo Yuri on stage, wearing a headset microphone and long pearl earrings.

A second strip runs along the bottom. It carries a line in Chinese characters followed by "JOYURI_CHN".

Who organized it?

The bottom line of the artwork names "JOYURI_CHN", next to Chinese text. That is the only credit on the ad, so it is the only one we repeat here. It suggests the ad came from fans who follow her from outside Korea, which is exactly the situation many of our readers are in.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A subway lightbox is a framed panel on a station wall with lights behind the print. Because it glows, the picture stays bright and clear all day in an underground space, and it photographs well, which matters when fans visit to take pictures.

A lightbox is one wide surface, so the layout has to do everything in a single frame. This ad shows a common way to handle that: one large photo on one side, one short greeting on the other, and thin strips at the top and bottom for the name, the numbers and the fan credit. Short lines work well here. People walk past, so a greeting of a few words is easier to take in than a long letter.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You can plan a birthday lightbox without travelling to Korea. The usual order is:

  1. Pick the occasion and the date you want the ad to be up for.
  2. Choose the kind of place: a subway station wall, a city bus or another spot.
  3. Get your greeting and photos ready, and check that you have the right to use each photo.
  4. Send us the plan. We will write back with the options that are open for your dates.

A birthday falls on a fixed day, so allow time for the artwork and the booking before it.

Our How It Works page explains each step. When you are ready, request a quote and tell us who the ad is for. Costs change with the ad type and the dates, so please contact us for a quote.
