Fans of Haechan (해찬) of NCT celebrated his birthday by filling a Seoul subway car with posters. The pink design reads "HAECHAN", "0606" and "해찬아 생일 축하해" ("Haechan, happy birthday"), and the corner is marked "HaeChanBar_CN". Here is what the car looked like and how fans abroad can plan the same kind of ad.
Where was the ad displayed?
This ad was not in a station. It was inside a train. Our photos were taken in an empty car, and the same poster appears again and again down both sides: in the frames beside the windows and doors, in the frames above the seats, and on the curved panels where the wall meets the ceiling.
We don't have a record of which line the train ran on, and nothing in our photos settles it, so we leave the line out. The dates are also not recorded.
What did the ad look like?
The artwork is pink and white with patches of green, and it has a sticker-collage feel.
"HAE" and "CHAN" are stacked in thick pink letters at the top left, with the Korean greeting "해찬아 생일 축하해" printed over them in black. Next to the name, "06" and "06" are stacked in green beside a small heart inside a speech bubble.
Three photos are arranged across the poster: a small full-length picture in a green cut-out shape, a half-length picture in the middle, and a large close-up on the right with one hand making an "OK" sign over one eye. A pink label reads "HAECHAN", an arrow at the bottom left reads "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HAECHAN", and the bottom right corner says "해찬 (2000)".
The fan credit, "HaeChanBar_CN", is printed in small letters at the top left.
On the long curved panels the same pieces are stretched out and repeated side by side, so the name runs along the ceiling line.
Who organized it?
The poster carries the name "HaeChanBar_CN". That is the only credit, and we give it as printed.
The poster shows the day, "0606", but no year for the ad itself, and our photos are undated. So this page has no year in its title.
What is an in-train ad?
An in-train ad uses the poster frames inside a subway car. When one design fills every frame in a car, as it does here, the whole carriage belongs to one artist for a while.
The effect is different from a station ad. A station panel is seen for a few seconds by people walking past. Inside a car, passengers sit or stand with the posters for their whole ride. One design, repeated many times, is the normal approach, and this ad shows why it works: the frames come in different shapes, and a collage of separate pieces can be rearranged to fit a square frame, a wide frame or a long curved strip.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
A birthday car can be planned from another country. In order:
- Choose the occasion and the date.
- Choose the kind of ad: inside a train, on a station wall, on a city bus or elsewhere.
- Prepare the greeting and photos, and confirm you have the right to use the photos.
- Send us your idea. We will reply with the options open for your dates.
In-train artwork has to be adapted to several frame sizes, so allow extra time for design.
