When Kang Daniel (강다니엘) released his 4th mini album in June 2023, fans supported it with a wide lightbox ad at Sadang Station in Seoul. The panel announces "강다니엘 - 미니앨범 4집 REALIEZ" with the date "JUNE 19. 2023", and a row of fan nicknames runs along the bottom. Here is what it looked like and how fans overseas can plan a comeback ad of their own.

Where was the ad displayed?

Our photos are filed under Sadang Station on Line 4, position B1. The panel is a wide illuminated frame on a white tiled wall in a station hall. A sign for the first basement level hangs to its left and a small notice board to its right.

The hall is open in front of the ad, so it can be seen from some distance as well as up close.

What did the ad look like?

The whole background is a sunset sky in red and orange, darkening to purple at the top. He is in the centre, in a dark shirt, looking straight at the viewer. A signature-style line in thin white script sweeps behind him from one side to the other.

"REALIEZ" stretches almost the full width in heavy white capitals. Above it, in smaller Korean text, is his name and "미니앨범 4집" ("4th mini album"). Below it, in orange, is "JUNE 19. 2023".

The top right corner reads "4TH MINI ALBUM" and "KONNECT ENT.". The top left reads "KANGDANIEL &DANITY". In the original, the logo of a fan voting service was printed over that corner, and we have blurred it in our photos.

When did it run?

The date printed on the ad is 19 June 2023. Our photo files are dated 13 July 2023, more than three weeks later, and the ad was still lit. We do not have the first or last day on record.

Who organized it?

Two things on the panel point to fans. The first is the "&DANITY" in the corner. The second is the bottom strip: ten nicknames separated by slashes, such as "youngniel" and "gee99", followed by a line inviting people to scan a code to see more participants. A small note above the strip says the ad came about through his fans taking part in a fan vote.

So although the layout looks like an album announcement, the panel itself says it was the fans' doing. We have not copied the name of the voting service.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A lightbox is a backlit print in a frame on a station wall. Sadang is a transfer station, so a panel in its hall is passed by people changing lines as well as people leaving the station.

For a comeback, the design job is different from a birthday. The title and the date need to be read first, as they are here, and the fan message takes a smaller place. A strip of names along the bottom is a common way to thank the people who joined in.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

Comeback ads are tied to a release date, so planning starts from that day:

  1. Fix the occasion and the date, such as the day the album comes out.
  2. Choose the medium and place: a lightbox in a transfer station, a screen door, digital screens or a bus.
  3. Prepare the title, message and images, and check that you have the right to use them. If you want to list fan names, collect and proofread them early.
  4. Send us your plan. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.

Release dates are sometimes announced late, so it helps to contact us as soon as you know the month.
