In 2022, fans celebrated the birthday of Joy (조이) of Red Velvet with posters inside a Seoul subway car. The green checked design reads "HAVE A JOYFUL DAY" and "조이 공주님 생일 축하합니다" ("Happy birthday, Princess Joy"), and it is signed "COPYRIGHT 2022 BY CHINA JOY BAR". This page shows the ad and explains how fans abroad can plan one.
Where was the ad displayed?
The posters were inside a train car. In our photos they sit in the frames on both sides of a set of doors, two on each side, and on the curved panel that runs above the frames.
The map above the doors in our photo is the general network map, so it does not tell us which line this car ran on. We have no record of the line or the dates, and we leave them out.
What did the ad look like?
The background is green and white gingham, like a picnic cloth, decorated with pink butterflies, smiley flowers, hearts and a small rainbow. The lettering is pink with a white edge and a green shadow.
There are three layouts.
Curved panel. The headline "HAVE A JOYFUL DAY" takes up the left half, with "0903" in a green pill beside it. Under the headline, a dark green bar holds "조이 공주님 생일 축하합니다". A small line below says "# COPYRIGHT 2022 BY CHINA JOY BAR". Two photos of Joy and a large "JOY" in pale green letters fill the right half.
Wide frame. Three cut-out photos with pink outlines sit on the gingham: one making a V sign, one resting her chin on her hand, and one full-length. "JOY PARK SOOYOUNG" curves across the top left. The Korean greeting runs up the right side, and a green strip on the edge reads "JOY : HAVE A JOYFUL DAY" and "19960903".
Upright frame. Beside the doors, a taller poster shows three more photos with the headline set on a slant and "0903" spelled out in small pink circles.
When did it run?
The posters name 3 September and the credit line prints "2022", so the ad marked 3 September 2022. We do not have the first and last day.
Who organized it?
The artwork is signed "CHINA JOY BAR". We repeat that as printed. It is one of several ads in our records placed by fans in China for an artist's birthday in Seoul.
What is an in-train ad?
An in-train ad uses the poster frames inside a subway car, from the upright frames by the doors to the long curved panels above. Riders are close to the posters, often within arm's length, and they stay for several stops.
That closeness is why this design can afford so much small decoration. Butterflies, stickers and side text would be lost on a billboard, but a passenger standing by the door has time to find them. The fans also drew a separate layout for each frame shape instead of stretching one picture, and kept the gingham, the colours and the lettering the same so the car still feels like one set.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
Fans outside Korea can plan an in-train ad in four steps:
- Choose the occasion and the date.
- Choose the kind of ad and place: inside a train, in a station, on a bus or another spot.
- Prepare the greeting and photos, and check that you have the right to use them. Ask us for the frame shapes before you start drawing.
- Send us your idea. We will reply with the options open for your dates.
A birthday is tied to one day, so begin early enough for design and booking.
