In early 2019, fans celebrated the 14th debut anniversary of SUPER JUNIOR Heechul (김희철) with an ad on a Seoul city bus. The panels read "영원히 빛나는 우주대스타 데뷔 14주년 축하합니다" ("Congratulations on the 14th debut anniversary of our forever-shining universe star") and carry the numbers "2005 0306". A small line says the ad is from fans in China. Here is what it looked like, and how fans abroad can plan something similar.

Where was the ad displayed?

The ad was on the outside of a blue Seoul city bus. The number 271 is painted on both sides and shown in the rear window in our photos. The artwork was placed on the road side, the door side and the rear.

We have no record of the exact days of the run, so the start and end dates are left blank.

What did the ad look like?

Two styles alternate around the bus: a light panel with blue and purple watercolour splashes, and a dark panel that looks like a night sky full of stars.

Road side. The wide watercolour panel shows his name twice, in Korean and in Chinese characters: "김희철 金希澈". Under it, in a rounded handwritten style, is the anniversary message quoted above. A portrait sits to the right, and the numbers 2005 and 0306 run down the two ends of the panel in turquoise. At the bottom, a small credit reads "FROM. 중국 꽃잎들 [中国花瓣]". Toward the back, a dark panel shows the numbers again with "우주대스타 / 데뷔 14주년 / 축하합니다."

Door side. The same two panels appear in the opposite order: the long watercolour banner under the windows and the dark starry panel next to the door.

Rear. A starry blue strip above the tail lights reads "김희철" in large brush letters, then "우주대스타 데뷔 14주년 축하합니다", then "2005 0306".

When did it run?

Our photos were taken on 27 February 2019. If the numbers on the ad are read as 6 March, the photos come about a week before that date, so the ad was on the road ahead of the anniversary. We do not know when it was removed.

Who organized it?

The credit line on the ad reads "FROM. 중국 꽃잎들 [中国花瓣]", which means "From the petals of China". That is the only name printed on the artwork, and we have copied it as written.

It shows something we are often asked about: fans in another country can put a message on a Seoul street and sign it in their own language.

What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?

A bus exterior ad is artwork printed on panels that are attached to the outside of a city bus. It moves with the bus, so the message is carried past stops, crossings and shopping streets all day.

This ad makes good use of contrast. The same message is set once on a light background and once on a dark one, so it stays readable in strong sun and in shade. The date is treated as a design element, set large enough to be read from a distance.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You can plan an anniversary ad without travelling to Korea. In general, the steps are:

  1. Choose the occasion and the date, for example a debut anniversary.
  2. Decide where the ad should appear: a city bus, a subway station or another spot.
  3. Prepare your message and photos, and make sure you have the right to use them. Decide how you want your group to be credited.
  4. Send us your idea. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.

An anniversary comes on a fixed day, so beginning early leaves time for artwork and booking.
