Fans in Japan celebrated the birthday of actor Ji Chang Wook (지창욱) with a wide lightbox ad at Nambu Bus Terminal Station in Seoul in July 2023. The panel says "HAPPY BIRTHDAY 5th July" in tall teal letters and carries a birthday letter written in Korean. It is signed "JCW Japan Supporters". Here is a closer look, followed by the steps for fans in other countries.

Where was the ad displayed?

The photos are filed under Nambu Bus Terminal Station on Line 3, lightbox position B5. The panel hangs on a tiled wall in the station, wide enough to fill most of the wall between two corners.

We do not have a note of which exit it is closest to.

What did the ad look like?

The background is white, crossed by curved music staves with notes in black, red and gold. On the left, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY 5th July" is stacked in three lines of pale teal letters. His name, "JI CHANG WOOK", cuts across it at an angle in pink, yellow and white.

The centre is a large photo of him making a V sign beside one eye and wearing black rabbit ears. Part of a word on his clothing is visible at the bottom edge.

To the right is a short letter in Korean. It begins "지배우님 생일 축하합니다", "Happy birthday, actor Ji", and goes on to say how glad the writers are to live in the same time as him and to be able to celebrate, and that they sincerely wish him happiness as he makes a new start. A red ribbon at the far right reads "祝 그날들 10주년", congratulating the 10th anniversary of "The Days", and a small line in the corner praises the musical. Two small cartoon figures in suits stand in the right-hand corners.

When did it run?

Our photo files are dated 13 July 2023, eight days after the 5 July printed on the ad. So the panel stayed up past the birthday itself. We do not have the start or end date.

Who organized it?

The bottom left corner has a small round logo and the words "JCW ♥Japan Supporters♥". Next to it is a credit line for the photo, the illustration and the translation, each followed by a nickname. We keep to that printed credit and do not add anything about the group.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A lightbox is a framed, backlit print on a station wall. At a station linked to a bus terminal, the people passing include travellers as well as daily commuters.

The wide format gave these fans room for three things side by side: a headline, a portrait and a full letter. That is worth knowing if your group wants to say more than one line. A letter of six or seven short lines stays readable at this size.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

These fans organized their ad from Japan. From any country, the steps are much the same:

  1. Decide the occasion and the date you are celebrating.
  2. Choose where the ad should go: a station lightbox, a screen door, digital screens or a city bus.
  3. Prepare the message and pictures, and confirm that you have the right to use them. If your letter needs translating into Korean, plan time for that.
  4. Send us your plan. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.

Starting several weeks ahead leaves room for translation checks and artwork changes.
