In spring 2018, fans wished Jang Woo-hyuk (장우혁) of H.O.T. a happy birthday with an ad on a Seoul city bus. The message, "0508 생일축하합니다", sits beside the words "Forever H.O.T.", and the panels are signed "White Angels Of China". Here is what the Jang Woo-hyuk birthday ad looked like, and how fans overseas can arrange something similar.
Where was the ad displayed?
The ad was on the outside of a blue Seoul city bus that shows the number 271 on its side, above the door and in the rear window. It used the road side, the door side and the rear.
We have no information on the stops served or on the first and last day of the run, so we are not stating them.
What did the ad look like?
The style is playful and a little retro. Every panel has a sky-blue background, a block of red pixels in one corner, and small ghost and dot characters in the manner of an old arcade game. A waving photo in a white T-shirt appears on each one, and a large, cropped close-up fills the left edge.
Road side. The banner has three text boxes with white backgrounds. The first reads "망원동 장우혁님 0508 생일축하합니다": "Happy birthday on 0508 to Mr. Jang Woo-hyuk of Mangwon-dong." The second reads "앞으로 돈길만 걷자~", a cheerful wish that means roughly "From now on, let's walk only on roads paved with good fortune." The third is in English: "Forever H.O.T." Further along the bus, a taller panel repeats all three lines under a bigger version of the photo.
Door side. A narrow banner near the back and a larger panel beside the door use the same boxes and the same photo, arranged to fit each shape.
Rear. The strip across the back lines up the three messages with a row of pixel characters between them. Near the right-hand end there is a small logo box and, under it, the words "White Angels Of China".
When did it run?
Our photos are dated 27 April 2018. The ad gives the day as 0508, so the pictures were taken eleven days before it. We have no record of when the panels were removed.
Who organized it?
The ad is signed "White Angels Of China". The name sits under a small logo on the banners and on the rear strip. The logo has more lettering inside it, which we cannot read clearly in our photos, so the name above is all we are passing on.
The address-style greeting and the Korean wish show how closely fans abroad can tailor a message for readers in Seoul.
What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?
A Seoul bus exterior ad is artwork printed on sheets and fixed to the outside of a city bus, on both sides and across the rear. The bus follows its timetable, and the message is carried past shops, stops and crossings along the way.
This design is a reminder that one visual idea can tie the surfaces together. The pixel shapes and game characters appear on every panel, so even the narrow banner near the back is recognisable as part of the same set. A strong theme like that helps when the panels are different sizes and cannot all hold the same layout.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
Fans do not need to be in Korea to put a birthday ad on a bus here. The general order is:
- Decide on the occasion and the date.
- Choose where the ad will be shown: a city bus, a subway station or another spot.
- Prepare the message and the photos, and make sure you have the right to use them.
- Share your idea with us. We will respond with the options available for your dates.
If your design uses a theme, such as the game graphics here, tell us at the start. It helps to know how the artwork should carry across panels of different shapes.
